From the edition of 500, inscribed 'Edition Picasso / Madoura' and with the 'Edition Picasso' and 'Madoura Plein Feu' pottery stamps on the base. Bears a label with the number '17', probably the reference of the Galeria Punto (Valencia) in which this piece was exhibited and purchased in the late 1970s.

Picasso began his long ceramic phase in 1946, when he visited the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris, a village in the south of France; he decided to collaborate with its potters to try his hand at making three ceramic pieces. The result and the relationship were excellent and the following year he began a 24-year collaboration during which the brothers Suzanne and Georges Ramié, owners of the Madoura workshop, gave him an area of the workshop for his production. The plates, figures, plaques or jugs were made in limited editions of between 25 and 500 pieces, on a lathe or with moulds, and then painted and fired by the Madoura team, who actively participated in the manufacturing process, although they were always personalised with the intervention of the artist himself, who closely supervised each piece.

This precious jug, of which Picasso made 500 copies in 1954, shows two profiles of a young figure and the owl, a recurring element in his iconography, marked with an incised groove on a white painted outline on a grey background. We can perfectly recognise Picasso's schematic and minimalist but very loose and expressive style. It is included in the catalogue raisonné of his ceramics Picasso: Catalogue of the Edited Ceramic Works 1947-1971 under reference number 246.

The present piece was acquired directly from the Galería Punto in Valencia, in a group exhibition that included several ceramics by Pablo Picasso.
