Latin motto: "MALO MORI QUAM FOEDARI" ("I would rather die than be dishonored")

The family name "Alzega" has its origin in Hernani, in the Basque Country, and the name "Cruzat" comes from Navarre, being documented from the XIIIth century.
Both combined names are mentioned in the General Archive of the Indies (Seville), where any important achievement or success by the Spanish citizens resident in the American territories was reported; thus, a handwritten document signed in february 17th, 1712, mentions specifically "Luís Alzega y Cruzat" as Sergeant Major of the Army, describing his numerous militar merits.

This nice and loose Baroque drawing is probably a preparatory design for a letters patent of nobility.
