Beautiful Gothic socarrat featuring an imaginary marine creature.
Socarrat plaques are typical elements from Paterna medieval ceramic production and were made from the late XIVth century in Valencia as a mean to decorate the ceilings of the palaces, where they were placed between the wooden beams, as a cheaper and faster alternative to painted wooden ceilings. Since there was no need to protect them against worn or water, after the clay moulding and firing, the plaques were not glazed and were simply decorated with ochre and black pigment on a lime ground.
Compositions included real and imaginary animals, boats, castles, human figures such as soldiers o couples, and more frecuently, vegetal motifs and geometrical patterns. Due to their unglazed and therefore unprotected condition, most of the surviving socarrats decorations are hardly in very good condition, worn and commonly scratched.
Good examples of Gothic socarrats such as ours can be seen in the González-Martí National Museum of Ceramics of Valencia and the Archeological Museum of Madrid.
