Saint Francis of Assisi

Technique: Tin-glazed eartheware with polychrome decoration

Dimensions: 80 x 60 cm Frame: 87,5 x 67 cm Weight: 16,7 kg

Condition: Good, several brakes consistent with age and support, all the tiles remain original.

Provenance: Private Collection, Valencia.

Beautiful devotional panel of twelve polychrome tiles representing Saint Francis of Assisi in an rural landscape, with a church and a sheep behind the Saint and a phylactery at the bottom centre identifying the saint.
The Saint holds an open book in his left hand and a standard in his right hand with the coat of arms of the Franciscan Order. It shows two crossing arms above the Cross: the naked arm symbolizes Jesus and the other one symbolizes Saint Francis of Assisi, founder of this Order in 1209.

This panel displays a great drawing and polychromy quality, as well as a very good condition taking into account its probable original location affixed to a wall.
